Biographical Sketch (including Community Activities)

Born in The Netherlands.  Emigrated to South Africa in 1954.  Attended Northlands Boys’ High School, Durban.  Worked as laboratory assistant for four years.  Studied Agronomy and Plant Pathology at the then University of Natal.  Married Merle, and has three married children and four grandchildren.  Had two sabbaticals in the USA and two in Holland.  Retired in 2003.  I enjoy reading, coin collecting, singing and gardening.  At various times I was Chairman of a Parish Council, of the Pietermaritzburg Philharmonic Choir and of the Board of the Amber Valley Trustees.

 

Academic

Appointed lecturer in Plant Pathology at the University of Natal in 1967, was then Senior Lecturer, Associated Professor, Professor of Plant Pathology, Head of the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology from 1988-1994, Dean Faculty of Agriculture 1994-1999, Chairman: SA Deans Committeee for Agriculture and Veterinary Science. Professor of Rural Development 2000-2003, Director Centre of Rural Development Systems 2000-2003.  After retirement: acting Director 2003-2004.  Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) 2003-2004, all at University of Natal / University of KwaZulu-Natal.  Fellow: SA Soc. of Plant Pathology.  Fellow: University of Natal.  Professor Emeritus from 2003.  Supervised 19 Masters and 14 PhD students.  Still invited to speak at overseas universities (in 2017 by Ohio State University, Univ. of Wageningen and Univ. of Utrecht)

 

Research Interests

Fungal plant diseases sensu lato.  Light, Scanning and Transmission electron microscopy of fungal pathogenesis, particularly of the rust fungi and early penetration by these.

 

Research Project

Compiling a website of unpublished electron micrographs.
